From its inception as the Marriage Guidance Council in 1973, the organisation has grown, evolved and diversified to become Relationships Australia NT as it is known today.
The Marriage Guidance Council was funded by the Cyclone Tracy Relief for Darwin and the Betting Control Board funds. The original Council solely provided marriage counselling, with only three staff members; a director, a staff counsellor and a secretary who collectively provided services to the greater Darwin area.
In the 45 years that Relationships Australia NT has been operating it has undergone significant growth and diversification to service the needs of its Territory clients.
We now employ more than sixty people in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Tiwi Islands, with outreach to remote communities. Included in our staff are a number of Aboriginal and Islander Cultural Advisors who serve the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, in a culturally appropriate way. People who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander represent 29% of the organisation’s clients and staff. 11% of our clients are from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds.
