What to expect from Family Mediation
Intake consultation
The first step in mediation is a phone intake consultation. During this initial consultation, you’ll talk about:
- why you want to attend mediation,
- safety and violence risks,
- concerns you have about mediation,
- who your mediator will be.
Information Session
Your first step in the family mediation process is attending an information session. The session focuses on the impact of conflict on children, and how to achieve outcomes that are in the best interests of the children. It also touches on the legal rights and responsibilities of everyone involved in the process.
Individual Session
The first session is an individual appointment with the mediator (Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner). You have the opportunity to discuss your situation one-on-one, and learn the process in more detail.
