New Service for Seniors – International Day of Older Persons

New Service for Seniors – International Day of Older Persons

1st October each year marks the International Day of Older Persons, a day to generally highlight the contributions that older people make in our society and to raise awareness of the challenges that older people can face in our community.

One in seven Australians are aged 65 years or older and, according to the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 years or over will globally outnumber youth within the next decade, a spectacular 46% increase.  In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are 50 years and older are considered ‘older people’ in recognition of the life expectancy ‘gap’ that, sadly, still exists between our Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

For the 2019 Day of Older Persons, we’d like to share information about our new ‘Senior Relationship Services’, which is currently operating in Darwin, and we anticipate that the service will also be available in Alice Springs later this year.  This free support service (funded by the Australian Government) is for people aged 65 years and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, who are experiencing, or are at risk of abuse. We aim to support older people to feel respected and safe in their daily life, by helping older people and their families to:

  • Resolve or prevent family conflict, in ways that aim to improve relationships
  • Have ‘difficult conversations’ and improve communication skills
  • Reduce the risk of physical, financial, sexual, psychological or emotional abuse, exploitation or neglect.

We work confidentially with older people and/or their families to provide:

  • Information, support and referrals; and/or
  • Counselling; and/or
  • Facilitated family meetings/mediation.

We also offer extra support from our ‘in-house’ Aboriginal and Islander Cultural Advisors, and through external interpreter services.
